Will - 1744 (Douglas)

Douglas January 28th 1741

In the name of God amen, I Richard Killey of the town aforesaid being weak in body but of perfect mind and memory, praise be therefore given to almighty God, do therefore make and ordain this my last will and testament in manner following:

I commend my soul to God hoping through the merits of my saviour Jesus Christ to receive full pardon and remission of all my sins; and my body I commit to the earth to be decently buried

Item I leave to my son Richard Killey who has been several years out of the Island one guinea

Item I leave to my daughter Catherine and her husband John Cottiman the sum of seven pounds legacy together with about the sum of three pounds they owe me in accounts but in case the said John Cottiman, his wife, their heirs or assigns should dispute this will on account of a further right due to them by the death of my son John Killey who lived in the house under me then and in that case I do deprive them of the said legacies or any other right they can claim by or under me and only leave them one shillling legacy betwixt them

Item I leave to my daughter Esther Moore als Killey my dwelling house with the garden adjoining which, after her decease, is to descend to my grandson Richard Moore but if so be that my said grandson happen to die before he come of age to dispose of the same by will or otherwise that then it is to return to my said daughter Esther Moore and to be at hers or her executor's disposal

Lastly I constitute, nominate and appoint my daughter Esther Moore als Killy sole executor of all the rest of my goods moveable and immoveable of what kind soever, leaving sixpence legacy to any other person that can claim anything

In witness hereof I have caused this will to be written and my name to be thereunto put the day and year aforesaid

NOTES

  1. Burial record says "old Richard Killey aged about 90" : 30th May 1744 Braddan so Richard was born 1655-1660
  2. He was a weaver
  3. Richard was the husband of Jane Mylrea. They married in 1689 in Braddan and presumably Jane was born in the 1660s
  4. Jane was the younger daughter of Katherine Moore and John Mc ylroy, and the sister of Margaret (m Joyner). Kath died in about 1698, and John left the island and was never heard of again, presumed dead
  5. Between Jane and Richard they held cottage allotment #104 (later renumbered 109), described in Lib Assed three houses and two gardens 12d, another little house ¾d and a house and garden on the sand side 2d Total rent 14d. Included in #104 were two tenancies purchased by Richard in 1686 and 1692, and a third much more valuable tenancy which Jane had inherited from her parents. The allotments were on (now) Barrack St
  6. They had children Charles (b1693), John (1701), Richard (1699), Katherine (m John Cottiman 1724), & Esther (m Peter Moore, Richard Joyner) 1704
  7. Richard & Jane sold a house and garden on the sand side of cottage allotment #104/9 in 1707, and gifted another building on the allotment to their son Charles in 1723
  8. What remained of cottage allotment #104/9 passed to their grandson Richard Moore in 1762. It was probably the original Mc Ylroy holding
  9. Jane died 1725. Her sons John and Charles had both died by the time her husband Richard died in 1744, leaving only her son Richard jnr and two daughters Catherine and Esther
  10. Son Charles had five children Richard (1731-1740), Thomas (1732-1732), Charles (1733), Jane (1735-1736) by wife Dorothy Gawn m1730 & d1735, and Elizabeth (1740) by second wife Margaret Maddrel m1739
  11. He was a prosperous Douglas merchant, involved in the Manx import/export trade
  12. Daughter Katherine (Cottiman) had three children - Jane (1725), John (1725), a son (1731)
  13. Daughter Esther had seven children Robert (1732), Richard (1735), Esther (1739), Peter jnr (1741), & Isabel (1737) with Peter Moore; after his death, Esther married Richard Joiner in 1742 and had children Margaret (1743) & Catherine (1745)
  14. Son Charles had the poignant burial entry: Mr Charles Killey & Peter Moore merchants with many passengers perished at sea. Both their son and their son in law were buried January 25th 1740 in Braddan
